Deserters from the Belper Regiment of Local Militia, May 1810

The following advertisement appeared in the Derby Mercury of Thursday, 31st May, 1810 and lists 35 men who had deserted from the Belper Regiment of Local Militia and in all bar two cases gives a full physical description of the man.

The muster books and pay lists for the regiment for the period 1808-1816 are at WO 13/3450

Joseph Ashby, framework-knitter, volunteer for Chaddesden, 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair; residing in St. Peter's, Derby.

John Arrawsmith, nailor, 29 years of age, volunteer for Heage, 5 feet 9 1/2 inches high, ruddy complexion, light grey eyes, and light hair; supposed to be a deserter from a regular Regiment.

Joseph Arrawsmith, nailor, volunteer for Heage, 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 3/4 inches high, dark complexion, light grey eyes, and light hair; supposed to be a deserter from a regular Regiment.

John Wheeler, servant man, ballotted for Kedleston, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 1/4 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair; residing at Kedleston.

Robert Knight, labourer, ballotted for Scropton and Foston, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 1/4 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, light hair; residing at Foston.

Thomas Twigg, wheelwright, volunteer for Clifton and Compton, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes and black hair; residing at Clifton.

William Butler, framework-knitter, volunteer for Codnor and Loscow, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 1/2 inches high, swarthy complexion, grey eyes, brown hair; residing at Stapleford.

Edward Green, marble man, volunteer for Eggington, 34 years of age, 5 feet 4 1/2 inches high, dark complexion, hazle eyes, black hair; residing in Bridge Street, Derby.

Thomas Stanley, labourer, volunteer for Heanor, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 1/4 inches high, fresh complexion, hazle eyes, brown hair; residing at Winkbourne.

Joseph Bowing, weaver, volunteer for Heanor, 27 years of age, 5 feet 10 1/4 inches high, fair complexion, hazle eyes, brown hair, residing at Marston Montgomery.

Joseph Hibbert, cabinet maker, volunteer for Heanor, 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair; residing in St. Werburgh's, Derby.

Joseph Standell, gardener, volunteer for Heanor, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, hazle eyes, brown hair; residing in St. Peter's, Derby.

William Pearson, framework-knitter, volunteer for Ilkeston, 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 1/2 inches high, dark complexion, hazle eyes, and brown hair; residing at Ilkeston.

Thomas Giles, framework-knitter, volunteer for Pentrich, 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light hair; residing at Nuttall.

George Bland, labourer, volunteer for Scropton and Foston, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high, fair complexion, dark hazle eyes, light brown hair; residing at Doveridge.

Thomas Cooke, wheelwright, volunteer for Clifton and Compton, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, dark grey eyes, brown hair; residing in St. Werburgh's, Derby.

George Wildman, collier, a balloted man for Codnor Park.

John Slingsby, framework-knitter, a balloted man for Heanor.

Robert Bestwick, druggist, a balloted man for Heanor, 26 years of age, 6 feet 1/4 inch high, fair complexion, light hazle eyes, black hair; residing at Heanor.

Samuel Milward, framework-knitter, a ballotted man for Morley, 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 1/4 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, light hair; residing at Little Eaton.

William Barrat, shoemaker, volunteer for Sutton on the Hill, 31 years of age, 5 feet 8 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, dark grey eyes, dark brown hair; residing at Doveridge.

Thomas Sykes, labourer, volunteer for Pentrich, 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair; residing at Higham.

William Henshaw, labourer, volunteer for Ilkeston, 19 years of age, 5 feet 4 1/4 inches high, ruddy complexion, hazle eyes, dark brown hair; residing at Ilkeston.

Samuel Wragg, labourer, volunteer for Yeoveley, 24 years of age, 5 feet 2 3/4 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair; residing at Crich.

Henry Clayton, nailor, volunteer for Belper, 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, grey eyes, and black hair; supposed to be at Netherton, in Worcestershire.

Samuel Cooper, labourer, volunteer for Belper, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, ruddy complexion, grey eyes, light hair; residing at Shottle.

Thomas Wheat, servant man, volunteer for Kirk Langley, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high, fair complexion, hazle eyes, light brown hair; residing at Kirk Langley.

William Walton, labourer, volunteer for Heanor, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, hazle eyes, brown hair; residing at Codnor.

Erasmus Fletcher, collier, volunteer for Duffield and Makeney, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair; residing at Pentrich.

Anthony Martin, moulder, volunteer for Ripley, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, hazle eyes, brown hair; residing at Butterley.

Jacob Slater, labourer, volunteer for Shottle and Postern, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair; residing at Wirksworth.

William Walker, labourer, volunteer for Sutton on the Hill and Trusley, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair; residing at Barton Blount.

John Watson, whitesmith, volunteer for Ripley, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair; supposed to be near York.

Thomas Matthews, moulder, volunteer for Ripley, 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, brown complexion, brown eyes, brown hair; supposed to be in a prison in Manchester.

John Cook, farmer, ballotted for Ilkeston, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 1/4 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair; supposed to be in Lincolnshire.

Whoever shall apprehend any of the above Deserters, and lodge them in any of his Majesty's Gaols, or shall bring them to the Head Quarters of the said Regimentt at Derby, shall receive a Reward of Twenty Shillings allowed by Government for apprending Deserters.
